The Perfect Pitstop

Context:
Project developed at Wildbytes for Globant, in the context of its official Formula 1 sponsorship.
Technologies:
Oculus Meta Quest · Virtual Reality · Unity · C# · Firebase · AWS S3
Description:
This project was commissioned to celebrate Globant’s official sponsorship of Formula 1 through an immersive and collaborative virtual experience. The result was a cooperative VR game in which users take on the roles of Formula 1 pit crew members, working together to complete a simulated pit stop as quickly and precisely as possible.
Once the users put on their VR Headsets, the game brings them to a futuristic and amazing race circuit, where they will be in sync with up to 3 players, each one with a specific role. After the task is completed, the system evaluates the team’s performance and provides feedback on how close they came to executing the perfect pit stop.
In the rapidly evolving era of spatial computing and standalone headsets, the development of a VR game put a lot of possibilities before us. In particular, the Oculus Meta Quest 3 Headset and its Hand and Body Tracking technology allowed us to create rich and dynamic virtual interactions. One of the tricky parts of the project was to push these possibilities to the limit to achieve a fun and entertaining experience. My main role in the team, consisted precisely in that, in defining and developing the interactions of the users during the game.
Another key challenge I contributed to was enabling synchronized multiplayer interactions by means of a light communication between the headsets. Apart from the development of the VR experience, the project was needed an iPad app which allowed the control of the game, a landing web page where users could register themselves before playing, and a cloud server which generated a video for the user to be shared after their experience.
The experience has been showcased at high-profile events including the F1 Grand Prix in Austin and Las Vegas, The Founders Forum in the UK, and the Formula 1 Fan Festival in Barcelona. The users that have tried it —including an actual Formula 1 driver— have been amazed at the quality of the game and the possibilities that this technology can bring us.
